Did you know ...

that Hvar is the SUNNIEST island in Croatia, boasting not less than 2724 hours of sunshine per year!

Pakleni Islands - In and around Hvar Town

The name of the archipelago Pakleni Islands in Hvar bay originates from the noun paklina, a melted down pine resin used to coat the hulls of ships on these islands. But somehow, instead Paklinski, they were named Pakleni (Hellish) Islands.

The Islands can be easily reached by frequent taxi boats from the harbour, just outside the Arsenal. Prices to the beaches Jerolim and Stipanska are 20 Kuna return, Zdrilca, 25 Kuna return, Palmizana, further out, 40 Kuna.

Boats to the nearer islands go every half hour or so between 9.00a.m. and 1.00p.m., returning at half hour intervals between 4.00p.m.and 6.00p.m. Those to the further islands leave hourly in the morning and return at about 4.30p.m.

If you prefer more adventurous experience, rent a small boat a sail there yourself.

The island of Jerolim is the coast is predominantly rocky there are small bays with small shingle or coarse sand if you really look. The vegetation, which comes almost right down to the shore, is a mixture of shrub and pine groves, so if you pick your spot carefully you can have plenty of shade in the heat of the afternoon, with the sea at your doorstep when you need to cool off. There is a restaurant.

On the island of Marinkovac you'll find charming Zdrilca. The octopus salad at the restaurant "Tri Grede" is one of the best in Hvar!

On the larger island of Sv. Klement you'll find Palmizana, with a sandy beach, a marina, 4 restaurants, bars and rooms and cottages for rent. The taxi boats drop you at the marina, from which a steepish path rises to your left across the island. At the top of the rise the path splits into three, the left hand fork going to a restaurant and rooms by the sea.

Towards the west of Palmizana there is a path which leads you to Vlaka, a small fishing village with the church of St. Clement (16th century). The walk takes a pleasant one hour and you pass several lovely beaches. In the village and around it there are several restaurants.
