that Hvar is the SUNNIEST island in Croatia, boasting not less than 2724 hours of sunshine per year!

Hvar, Korcula, Split- Green Lizard, Hvar

Hvar Town highlights

  • Nightlife - Hvar town has a very lively nightlife, there are plenty of bars and cafes. Carpe Diem cocktail bar has an outdoor area, music is smooth, entrance is free although cocktails are expensive. Sidro is our favourite. The bar has a nice, not too big not too small terrace, beer is cold and cocktails are great!
  • The Fortress - Climb up through a park to the Spanjola fortress around sunset. The view over the harbour and Pakleni islands from there is magnificent! The fortress was originally built defend the town from the Turks. It was strengthened in 16th, and then again in the 19th century.
  • Arsenal - In the morning or early evening, visit a tiny theater built in 1612 in the Arsenal building on the main square. The theater is one of the first in Europe to be open to both common people and aristocrats. Arsenal building was in 16th century of great importance for Venice, serving as repair station for her war galleons.
  • Beaches - For the best beaches, head to Pakleni Islands.

Korcula

  • The Town - Korcula town on nearby island of Korcula is just about 2 hours away from Hvar Town. It's a nice small medieval town on a hill with a nice rocky beaches just a few minutes away. It's also conveniently located on the route between Hvar and Dubrovnik.
  • Fun & sleeping - Definitely visit Fresh, which serves tasty wraps and smoothies and it's a great place to meet other travellers and exchange your books. There is a also hostel in Korcula, run by a young owner who likes to party so staying at the hostel includes a great deal of fun.

Split

  • Old town & Marjan - At the heart of Split is old town built in the area surrounding the Diocletian's Palace. The Palace is one of the most outstanding classical remains in the world. It was built as a retirement home by Roman Emperor Diocletian in 305 AD. On the side towards the sea, the sea used to come right up to the Palace. The gate on this side leads to a vaulted hall, from which stairs lead to the Peristyle. The Peristyle used to be the central courtyard of the Palace. On its eastern side was the entrance to Diocletian's mausoleum, surrounded by an arcade of Corinthian columns. Split's cathedral which stands now in mausoleum's place retains its original octagonal shape. Just outside of the gate at the end of Dioklecijanova street is a statue of Grgur Ninski, by famous sculptor Ivan Meštrović. Fifteen minutes' walk from there, the Archeological Museum contains collection of Illyrian, Greek, medieval and Roman artefacts.

The woods of the Marjan peninsula are west of the old town, accessible from Obala hrvatskog narodnog preporoda via Sperun and then Senjska. From the road, tracks lead up into the heart of the Marjan Park, which is thickly wooded with pines. On the lower, southern edge, along Šetalište Ivana Meštrovića is Meštrović Gallery, some fifteen minutes west of the centre by bus no. 12 from the seafront. The gallery is housed in the noticeable Neoclassical building that was built and lived in by Meštrović. Mestrović's former workshop, Kaštelet, is 300m up the same road.
  • Around Split - There are a few interesting places in Split surroundings, Solin, Ciovo and Trogir to name but a few. Our favorite is the nearby old town of Trogir, which is a Unesco listed World Heritage site.
  • Sleeping - If you are staying the night in Split, you might want to check out the new Split Hostel right in the centre of Split old town.
